FMGE 2026: Syllabus, Exam Pattern & Best Study Material

What is FMGE?

FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduates Examination), also known as the MCI Screening Test, is a mandatory licensing exam that Indian citizens holding a primary medical qualification from a foreign university must clear to practice medicine in India. It is conducted twice a year by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).

FMGE 2026 exam pattern

FMGE is a 300-question, two-part exam split over a single day. Part A and Part B each contain 150 MCQs and 2.5 hours are allotted per part. There is no negative marking — so attempt every question. To pass, you must score at least 150 out of 300 (50%).

Subjects and weightage

Roughly 60% of FMGE questions come from clinical subjects — Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics. The remaining 40% comes from pre- and para-clinical subjects. Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine, though "short subjects", together account for 25–30 marks — never skip them.

Recommended study material

  • FMGE-specific notes: Concise, exam-oriented PDFs that follow the exact FMGE blueprint.
  • Video lectures: HD, structured video lectures for the clinical subjects — helpful if you did your MBBS in a non-English language.
  • Previous-year question papers: FMGE repeats question concepts heavily. Solve the last 10 years thoroughly.
  • Rapid revision handbook: One 200-page revision resource for the last 30 days.

4-month FMGE plan

Month 1: High-yield clinical subjects (Medicine, Surgery).

Month 2: Obs/Gynae, Paediatrics, Community Medicine.

Month 3: Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic + first revision.

Month 4: Rapid revision + previous years + 4 full-length mocks.

Why the FMGE pass rate is low — and what you can do

Historical FMGE pass rates have hovered around 20–25%. The main reasons are inconsistent preparation, lack of exposure to the Indian exam format, and an over-reliance on non-Indian textbooks. Fix all three with exam-focused Indian material, disciplined revision, and continuous MCQ practice.

Final word

FMGE is very passable with the right strategy — no negative marking, a 50% pass mark, and predictable question patterns. Curated FMGE study material and structured video lectures — exactly what StudyHub offers with view-only PDFs and secure streaming — make the difference between a first-attempt clear and repeated attempts.
